Science Fiction Double Feature
A couple of webloggers that I follow, Peter Milan and John Scalzi, have both just finished writing novels over this past weekend. Congats to both of you!
Pete's been writing online for years; I don't know if he's ever been published in the print world, though. His novel seems to have been more of a personal challenge, just to prove to himself he can do it. I think he's still mulling over what to do with it now that he's finished; I gather he hasn't decided whether to seek a publisher, post the beast online, or tuck it away for his own personal sense of accomplishment. I wish him the best of luck, whatever his choice.
Scalzi, on the other hand, has done quite a bit of print publishing, and has been writing his novel to complete a two-book deal. I read his Old Man's War when he first posted it online, just before Tor Books made him an offer he couldn't refuse and picked it up for publication. (It's supposed to reach shelves near the end of this year, and I know I'll be buying at least one copy as a present.) He's also put up a good post about the process of writing the new novel.
One thing both of these authors seem to have in common, though, is a rush to finish everything up before a deadline. Not to mention the relief of having met their deadlines. At any rate, I'm looking forward to any chance to read their stories.
